One Good Reason: Confession

“When’s the last time you have been to confession?”

This time in our practical evangelization series we are going to throw down a challenge: we double dog dare you to give someone a reason why you are Catholic.

One of the most fruitful methods of direct evangelization we have found is to ask someone if you can give them “one good reason” why you are Catholic. This takes different forms depending on the person you are talking to, but these 2 minute conversations can mean the difference between someone going to heaven or hell. For instance, if someone says that they don’t believe in God, you might say, “Can I give you one good reason that I choose to believe in God?”

What if someone says that they are Catholic, but don’t go to confession any longer? You might say, “Can I give you one good reason that I choose to go to confession?” By putting the question on yourself, you avoid accusing the person of doing something wrong. Instead you’re helping them examine their own conscience by telling them the difference the Sacrament of Reconciliation has made in your own life.

So what’s one good reason? You might say: “Well, when we commit serious sin, we separate ourselves from God and fall out of His grace. If we do not go to confession often, it is very difficult to stay out of serious sin. The way that God established to restore us to His friendship when we fall is through confession to a priest. Also, each time we do it gives us strength to stay out of sin in the future. What do you think? Did I convince you to get to confession as soon as possible?”

You might come up with your own good reasons too. When Jesus started His ministry he declared: “The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news.” (Mark 1:15) The task of evangelization is the same today as it was then. So, we double dog dare you to give someone “one good reason” why you go to confession this week.
